Statement:
Throughout the 20th Century, publishing world in Asia had been at the receiving end. Knowledge produced in Euro-America has been “translated” into Asian languages and circulated in “local” markets. The reverse direction of flow has been minimal, not to mention the extreme limited contacts with Africa and Latin America. This one-way street has further generated a blockage of flow among Asian language markets: the desire has always been with the “West” but not among “ourselves”. When confronting the era of (neo-liberal) globalization, these conditions are no longer justifiable or desirable and need to be changed. To globalize Asian publication is an urgent task. What needs to be done to multiply the directions of flow of knowledge is at the center of intellectual concerns. Focusing on academic book publishing, this forum invites publishers and experts across Asia and beyond to share their working experiences and thoughts on the strategy to transform the current conditions.
The Inter-Asia Cultural Studies–Movement journal project has been a minor attempt to insert critical voices in the existing structure of international knowledge production for the past decade. An intellectual network in Asia is now in place. An Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Society has been established to further institutional exchange and alliance. Its first open-call conference will be held in June 2007 in Shanghai. A book series was also signed to generate more knowledge directly out of Asia. The project is moving into a new stage. We wish to use the Inter-Asia project of book publishing to address larger issues in the global structure of knowledge production.
