<Statement>

This Summer Camp aims at organizing an open forum where young cultural studies researchers and graduate students gather and discuss common interests and current issues. The camp intends to provide participants with the opportunity to share, with fellow-researchers and cultural practitioners, concerns about emerging cultural phenomena and agenda in Asia and beyond. Another purpose of the camp lies in fostering the participants’ visions and passions as future scholars and activists.
Today, the neo-liberalist order is greatly influencing the methods of governance, the profit-making of corporations, the general trend of popular culture, and the knowledge production of academia. Cultural researchers are in the situation of having to understand the actual workings of the world through creating critical discourses and cultural practices. This camp is a place for education, in which next generation cultural researchers gather and communicate through researching radical changes brought about by neo-liberalist order.
Throughout the Camp, young researchers and students who are interested in the cultural currency and urgency of Asia will have uplifting experiences of learning and networking by discussing with scholars, experts, activists, and policy-makers. Asia is rapidly changing and the future generation of cultural studies researchers and cultural workers is emerging. In the camp, we wish to create a critical perspective toward what is happening “here and now” in the inter-Asia and a sustainable platform for solidarity and collaboration among the young generation.

Abstract

Malana is a bundle of contradictions in twenty-first century as it completely rejects any outside system to influence it; thereby it tries to point a finger to the lacunas and chinks in the development of the village economy. An attempt through this paper has been made to provide, analysis of sustainable development for policy planners and for villagers too. Agriculture in village was of subsistence nature and purely organic. Customs and traditions followed in Malana show a clean and principled way of governance. Widows and deserted women are allowed to remarry but if the woman is already married than she has to pay compensation. Besides the traditional way of marriage boy and girl marry clandestinely. Polygamy is allowed in the village but not the Polyandry.
The village is said to be oldest democracy of world and peculiar social structure rests on villager’s unshaken faith in their powerful deity, the Jamdagani or Jamlu devta. Although property and social disputes are very rare among the Malanis’, if at all there is any it is taken to judicial council-the Malana Supreme Court for the final judgment and not to any government agency or court of law. This Malana Republic or Quorum consists of two houses. Head of each family of Malana represents lower house, so Malana democratic is a unique system in which every household participate equally in decision-making.
For all types of legal and administrative disputes, the matter is first referred to upper house which after discussion passes its decision to lower house. If the discrepancy still persists and upper and lower house both fail to give decision the case finally comes to the spiritual court of the Deity. A day is fixed for its verdict as per norms of the oral constitution of the Malana. Then in accordance with the constitution two white lambs of equal age and weight are brought to the deity’s place for the final judgement.
